Contemporary Art Exhibition: Drifting Selves

In this age dominated by speed and mobility, our “self” seems to have long lost its stability. Identity is no longer a single label, but a river constantly drifting, shifting, and reshaping. It traverses memory and reality, emerging in new forms at the margins of culture.

“Drifting Selves” invites 51 artists from around the world to explore the fluidity of contemporary identity. Employing diverse forms such as video, installation, painting, and photography, the works address a state between “here”and “elsewhere”—how we are viewed by others and how we observe ourselves within the migrating body, the fractured nature of language, and the mirrored forms of digital space.

This drifting is not a form of loss, but a way of being. It allows us to learn to locate ourselves amidst uncertainty and redefine the meaning of “I.” When boundaries blur and foundations are loosened, we begin to search for our own coordinates in a constant cycle of departures and arrivals.

“Drifting Selves” is an exhibition about “becoming.”It‘s about how we continually reinvent ourselves within the flow of the world.

In BREAKING THROUGH, the latest exhibition from The Holborn Group, the diverse collective will address perceptions of contemporary life, urban and rural landscapes as well as social and political issues. 

In a world that feels increasingly fractured, the mutual support in exhibiting together consistently, for over a decade, is testament to the power of creativity.

This year, we will be joined by four guest artists and are excited to be exhibiting Downstairs at the Department Store, Brixton, a venue with space to explore more ambitious work which will include paintings, drawings, textile and sculptural pieces.

Nature / Nurture is a solo exhibition by Sarah Jane Moon, opening in London in July 2025, that explores queer identity, place, and belonging through vivid oil portraits of LGBTQIA+ figures in the UK and intimate works from Aotearoa New Zealand. The exhibition weaves together themes of visibility, lineage, and chosen family, reflecting the artist’s bicultural heritage and challenging traditional narratives of identity and home. Through emotionally resonant depictions of cultural icons and personal connections, Moon’s work invites reflection on queerness, migration, and the power of representation.

This summer, the Contemporary British Portrait Painters (CBPP) collective showcases the work of over 60 contemporary portrait artists, including winners of both the National Portrait Gallery’s prestigious annual prize and Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, in a powerful exploration of shared human experience. Founded in 2018 as a non-profit, artist-run collective, CBPP is dedicated to presenting fresh, contemporary perspectives on portraiture, with an exhibition catalogue featuring a foreword by curator and Art Historian Kate Bryan.

Lucy Hadfield, in her seventies and wearing a floor-length green “visibility” cloak adorned with personal symbols, is challenging the idea that ageing makes one invisible, using her artwork as a joyful statement on the richness of later life. She is one of 32 students, aged from their twenties to seventies, showcasing final projects exploring wellbeing, identity, and creativity at CityLit’s Art Foundation exhibition in Brixton from 18–21 June.

Nostalgia - An Exhibition by David Roberts

Kenyan British Artist, David Roberts, will hold his first London solo art exhibition at The Department Store, Brixton (Downstairs) from Thursday 29 August to Sunday 1 September 2024.

David Roberts, (born 1986 in Kenya) is a painter and printmaker. Inspired by the dramatic and wild landscapes of his childhood, David’s artworks focus on the fleeting patterns, light and interactions of the natural world.

Nostalgia is about unnatural events in the natural world. Roberts’ work preserves both memory and subject, however fleeting. His technique is a microscopic examination of nature’s own artwork. It celebrates the overlooked but fundamental elements of life itself: wildflowers and pollinators, revealing their magnificent but fragile beauty.
