Abe Odedina will present True Love at The Department Store in Brixton, a series of paintings commissioned by Danny Boyle for the South African based charity, Dramatic Need.
The paintings respond to testimonies from young people in South Africa who had undergone highly traumatic life experiences. The series was used as a backdrop to performances of the testimonies by a star-studded cast at Carnegie Hall, New York, in 2017. Now, in his home town of Brixton, Odedina will exhibit these paintings for the first time.
Abe Odedina is a trained architect who began painting on a trip to Brazil in 2007. Now a full-time painter, Odedina works with acrylic on plywood, making flat surfaces with vibrant, stylised subjects that delight in the use of colour and celebrate the power of both the everyday and the mythical. Works by Odedina have been acquired by the British Government Art Collection and exhibited at The Royal Academy, the National Portrait Gallery and the Stephen Friedman Gallery. Currently he is working towards a solo show at The Underground
Museum in Los Angeles in 2019.
